What it means
A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the steering angle sensor module. The code identifies the communication loss; stability or steering-assistance functions may be affected depending on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The steering angle sensor reports how far and in which direction the steering wheel is turned, information used by systems such as stability control. The receiving module sets U0236 when it no longer gets expected network messages from the steering angle sensor module.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loss of power or ground to the module
- Open, shorted, or damaged network wiring or connector
- Failed sensor or module
Symptoms
- A steering-angle, stability-control, or related warning may appear
- Some stability or driver-assistance functions may be unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check which modules report U0236, along with any steering-angle or network codes that could show whether the fault is shared.
- Check live data for a steering-angle reading while turning the wheel slowly; a missing or implausible reading supports a communication or sensor-module issue.
- Inspect the steering angle sensor module connector and accessible network wiring for looseness, corrosion, water intrusion, or damage.
- Check the module’s power and ground under the conditions specified by the manufacturer, since a supply fault can make it disappear from the network.
- Test the network wiring to the steering angle sensor module for opens or shorts using the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer’s procedures.
- If power, ground, and network wiring pass, follow the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure to determine whether the steering angle sensor module has failed.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair a loose, corroded, or damaged steering angle sensor module connector.
- Repair damaged network wiring to the steering angle sensor module.
- Restore the module’s power supply or ground connection.
- Replace the steering angle sensor module if testing confirms it has failed.
Can I keep driving?
Drive cautiously only if steering feels normal, and assume stability control or related assistance may be unavailable. Avoid relying on those functions, especially on slippery roads, and arrange diagnosis promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
