What it means
A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the lateral acceleration sensor module. Stability functions that rely on lateral acceleration data may be limited or unavailable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
The lateral acceleration sensor module measures side-to-side acceleration as the vehicle corners or changes direction. Stability control uses that information to assess whether the vehicle is following the intended path. U0124 sets when a control module stops receiving the sensor module’s network messages, which can limit or disable stability control.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Lateral acceleration sensor module power or ground fault
- Damaged network wiring or connector
- Lateral acceleration sensor module failure
- Low system voltage
Symptoms
- Stability control warning
- Stability control may be unavailable
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and record freeze-frame data and related stability, network, and low-voltage codes to identify whether other modules have also lost communication.
- Check battery condition and charging voltage, since low system voltage can disrupt sensor and network operation.
- Use vehicle service information to locate the lateral acceleration sensor module, then inspect its connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or looseness.
- Check the module’s power and ground circuits and see whether a scan tool can communicate with it or display lateral acceleration data.
- If the module has proper power and ground but remains offline, test its network wiring and terminals against the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Correct a weak battery or charging-system fault.
- Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded lateral acceleration sensor connector.
- Repair damaged network wiring or connector terminals.
- Restore the sensor module’s power or ground.
- Replace the lateral acceleration sensor module if its supplies and network circuits test correctly but it remains offline.
Can I keep driving?
The car may still steer and brake normally, but stability control may lack lateral acceleration data and may be unavailable. Drive slowly, avoid abrupt cornering and slippery conditions, and get the system checked before relying on stability assistance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
