OBD-II fault code

U0116: Lost Communication With Vehicle Dynamics Control Module

What it means

A control module has lost communication with the vehicle dynamics control module. Stability or related chassis functions may be affected, depending on the vehicle.

How it works

The vehicle dynamics control module exchanges information with other modules so they can coordinate stability and chassis functions. This code sets when a reporting module stops receiving expected messages from that specific module; the cause may be its power, ground, network connection, or the module itself.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loss of module power or ground
  2. Open, shorted, or damaged communication wiring or connector
  3. Module or gateway fault

Symptoms

  • Stability or chassis warning lights
  • Vehicle dynamics functions may be unavailable
  • Communication faults in other modules

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and record U0116 and related network codes, noting which modules cannot communicate with the vehicle dynamics control module.
  2. Check freeze-frame data and whether stability or chassis warnings appeared at the same time as other electrical or network faults.
  3. Inspect the vehicle dynamics control module's connectors and nearby harness for looseness, corrosion, water entry, or damage.
  4. Using the wiring diagram, check the module's power and ground circuits under load against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Test the communication wiring between the module and the vehicle network for opens, shorts, or poor connections, following the manufacturer's procedure.
  6. If power, ground, wiring, and network access are sound, check for a gateway or vehicle dynamics control module fault using vehicle-specific diagnostics.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded vehicle dynamics module connector and repair damaged wiring.
  • Repair a failed power feed or ground to the vehicle dynamics control module.
  • Repair an open or short in the module's communication wiring.
  • Diagnose and repair a gateway fault, or replace and configure the vehicle dynamics control module if confirmed faulty.

Can I keep driving?

If stability or chassis warnings are on, assume those functions may be unavailable and drive cautiously, avoiding slippery roads and abrupt maneuvers. If braking or steering behavior changes, stop safely and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
