What it means
A control module has lost communication with the four-wheel drive clutch control module. Four-wheel-drive clutch operation may be affected on vehicles that use this module.
How it works
The four-wheel-drive clutch control module commands or monitors the clutch that transfers drive to an additional axle on vehicles equipped with this system. Other modules expect status messages from that module; U0114 sets when communication with it is lost. The code does not show whether the clutch itself is faulty or whether the module simply lost power or network access.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- AWD clutch module unpowered
- CAN wiring to AWD clutch module broken
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Save the all-module scan and freeze-frame data, noting whether the four-wheel-drive clutch module is offline and whether related gateway or drivetrain codes are present.
- Check the module's relevant fuses, power, and ground connections, and inspect them for looseness or corrosion.
- Inspect the clutch module connector and CAN wiring for damage, water intrusion, chafing, or loose pins.
- Check whether the scan tool can communicate with the clutch module and whether four-wheel-drive mode selection or status is unavailable.
- If power and ground are correct but the module remains offline, test its CAN circuit and gateway message routing to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair a poor battery connection or weak system voltage affecting module communication.
- Replace a failed fuse or repair the four-wheel-drive clutch module's power or ground connection.
- Repair damaged CAN wiring or clean and secure the module connector.
- Correct a confirmed gateway routing fault that blocks communication with the clutch module.
- Replace or reprogram the clutch control module only after its power and communication circuits pass testing.
Can I keep driving?
If four-wheel-drive operation is unavailable, assume the vehicle may not have the expected traction and avoid slippery or demanding terrain. If warning lights accompany unusual drivetrain behaviour, stop safely and have the fault diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
