What it means
A control module has lost communication with drive motor control module 2. On vehicles with more than one drive motor controller, electric drive functions may be limited or unavailable.
How it works
Drive motor control module 2 manages or reports functions for a second electric drive motor on vehicles equipped with that system. This code sets when another module stops receiving expected network messages from that controller, which can limit electric propulsion or prevent the vehicle from operating normally.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loss of module power or ground
- Open, shorted, or damaged communication wiring or connector
- Module or gateway fault
Symptoms
- Hybrid or electric system warning
- Reduced or unavailable propulsion may occur
- Communication faults in other modules
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules for U0117 and related hybrid or electric drive codes, and note which modules report no communication with drive motor control module 2.
- Review freeze-frame data and warning history to see whether the fault began during startup, charging, or driving.
- Inspect the second drive motor controller's accessible connectors and harness for damage, moisture, loose pins, or signs of heat.
- Check the controller's low-voltage power and ground circuits using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's test procedure.
- Test the network wiring to drive motor control module 2 for opens, shorts, or connection faults, taking required high-voltage safety precautions.
- If its supply and network circuits pass, check gateway routing and controller status with vehicle-specific diagnostics.
Common fixes
- Secure or repair damaged low-voltage wiring or connector terminals at drive motor control module 2.
- Restore a failed low-voltage power supply or ground to the controller.
- Repair an open or short in the controller's communication network wiring.
- Repair a confirmed gateway fault or replace and configure drive motor control module 2 if testing identifies it as faulty.
Can I keep driving?
If a hybrid or electric system warning appears or propulsion is reduced, avoid trips that depend on full power and do not continue if the vehicle cannot accelerate or operate predictably. A loss of the second drive controller can progress to limited or unavailable propulsion.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
