What it means
The turbocharger compressor outlet temperature sensor reports a circuit range/performance fault. Charge air temperature post-compressor is unreliable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The turbocharger compressor outlet temperature sensor measures the temperature of compressed air leaving the turbocharger. The engine control module compares the reading with expected conditions and sets P2EC2 when it is implausible or does not change as expected, even if the circuit is not simply stuck high or low.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor fault or drift
- Wiring or connector fault
- Reading inconsistent with operating conditions
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may illuminate
- Engine performance may be reduced
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare the outlet temperature reading with ambient temperature on a cold engine and with other available intake temperature readings.
- Watch live temperature data while the engine warms and load changes to see whether the reading is erratic, slow to respond, or inconsistent with operating conditions.
- Inspect the sensor and connector for contamination, corrosion, loose pins, and harness damage that could cause intermittent readings.
- Check sensor power, ground, and signal wiring for poor connections or intermittent faults using the wiring diagram and service procedure.
- If the circuit is sound, test sensor accuracy and response against the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose connector and clean or repair corroded terminals.
- Repair damaged or intermittently connected sensor wiring.
- Replace the compressor outlet temperature sensor if it drifts or responds incorrectly during testing.
- Clear the code and confirm the reading changes plausibly under varying engine load.
Can I keep driving?
The engine may reduce power or enter limp mode, so avoid towing, hard acceleration, and sustained high boost until the fault is diagnosed. Stop driving if power loss makes it unsafe or if other serious warnings appear; an implausible reading can affect engine control.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
