OBD-II fault code

P2EC1: Turbocharger Compressor Outlet Temperature Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The turbocharger compressor outlet temperature sensor reports a circuit high fault. Charge air temperature post-compressor is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The turbocharger compressor outlet temperature sensor measures air temperature after the turbocharger compresses it. The engine control module monitors the sensor circuit and sets P2EC1 when the signal is above the expected range, which can result from an open circuit or a signal shorted to voltage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal circuit shorted to voltage
  2. Open circuit
  3. Sensor fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may illuminate
  • Engine performance may be reduced

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare the scan-tool outlet temperature reading with ambient temperature before starting and with other temperature readings when the engine is cold.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for a disconnected plug, pushed-back pin, corrosion, or chafing against a powered wire.
  3. Use the wiring diagram to check the sensor signal, reference, and ground connections for an open circuit or unintended voltage.
  4. Check continuity through the signal wire and inspect for a short to voltage following the manufacturer’s service procedure.
  5. If the wiring checks pass, test the sensor output against the manufacturer’s specification and replace it only if it fails.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the sensor plug and secure the harness if it has come loose.
  • Repair an open signal or ground wire, damaged terminal, or short to voltage.
  • Replace a failed compressor outlet temperature sensor.
  • Clear the code and verify the live temperature reading tracks operating conditions.

Can I keep driving?

Because this fault can trigger reduced power or limp mode, avoid high boost, towing, and overtaking that needs strong acceleration. If power drops sharply or the engine behaves abnormally, stop in a safe place and arrange diagnosis, as the control module is working with an unreliable charge-air temperature signal.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
