OBD-II fault code

P2EA8: DC/AC Converter A Input Voltage Too High

What it means

The DC/AC converter A has detected input voltage above its expected range. The effect on converter operation depends on the vehicle design.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

DC/AC converter A converts direct current into alternating current for vehicle functions that use that output. The control module monitors the converter's input voltage and sets this code when it rises above the expected range. An upstream regulator overvoltage or a wire connected to a higher-voltage rail can cause the excessive input.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Upstream regulator overvoltage
  2. Wire shorted to higher rail

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced or disabled converter-related functions

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and note the vehicle operating state and other electrical or hybrid-system codes present with the overvoltage.
  2. Inspect accessible converter A supply wiring and connectors for damaged insulation, incorrect contact, overheating, or evidence of a short to another power rail.
  3. Check related supply and regulator data with a scan tool, following the manufacturer's service information.
  4. Measure converter A input voltage under the manufacturer's specified conditions and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Trace an excessive reading upstream to identify a regulator or wiring fault before replacing converter A.

Common fixes

  • Repair a damaged wire shorted to a higher-voltage rail in the converter A input circuit.
  • Correct a loose or misconnected supply connection if testing identifies one.
  • Repair the upstream regulator or supply fault responsible for overvoltage.
  • Replace converter A only if its input is within specification and it fails the manufacturer's tests.

Can I keep driving?

An overvoltage can disable converter-related functions and may affect vehicle power or charging. Limit driving and avoid using affected electrical functions; stop safely if a hybrid-system warning or power limitation occurs.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
