OBD-II fault code

P2E44: Hybrid/EV Electronics Coolant Pump B Control Circuit High

What it means

Hybrid/EV electronics coolant pump B reports a control circuit high condition. Power electronics cooling on this branch is impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pump B circulates coolant through a branch serving hybrid or EV power electronics. The control module monitors the pump's control circuit and sets P2E44 when it detects a higher-than-expected electrical level, which can indicate a poor connection or a fault in the pump or its driver.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pump motor or driver fault
  2. Air or coolant level issue
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced power or limited hybrid operation
  • Possible power-electronics overheating warning

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan hybrid-system live data for pump B commands, feedback, and any related cooling or temperature faults.
  2. With the vehicle safely powered down according to its owner information, check the coolant level and look for leaks or signs of air in pump B's cooling branch.
  3. Inspect pump B's connector and accessible wiring for corrosion, loose pins, damage, or moisture that could raise circuit resistance.
  4. Compare pump B's control-circuit readings with the manufacturer's specification and check for an open, short, or high-resistance connection.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test pump B and its driver using the manufacturer's procedure to determine which has failed.

Common fixes

  • Correct low coolant or bleed air from pump B's branch using the vehicle's specified procedure.
  • Clean or repair corroded, loose, or damaged pump B connector terminals and wiring.
  • Replace a faulty pump B motor or integrated driver after confirming the circuit condition.
  • Clear the code and verify pump B operation and power-electronics temperatures.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid heavy acceleration, steep climbs, or other high-load use because impaired cooling can overheat power electronics and trigger reduced-power operation. If an overheating warning appears or power is limited, stop safely and arrange service.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
