OBD-II fault code

P2E3C: Battery Charger B Output Current Performance

What it means

Battery charger B reports a output current performance condition. HV charging operation may be impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Battery charger B controls current delivered while charging the high-voltage battery. The control module checks whether charger B’s output current behaves as expected for the charging command and load; this code indicates current performance is out of range, even if voltage is not the primary fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Output current characteristic drifted
  2. Load impedance changed

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and inspect charger B commanded and measured current alongside voltage and charging status.
  2. Repeat charging with a suitable known-good EVSE and cable to see whether the abnormal current behavior follows the vehicle or the charging setup.
  3. With charging stopped, inspect charger B’s accessible connectors and output wiring for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or overheating.
  4. Compare commanded and actual output current during an approved charging test at the relevant load.
  5. Check the charger’s current-control circuitry and the connected load using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure and specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or high-resistance charger B wiring or connector contacts.
  • Correct a charging-source, cable, or load mismatch if testing identifies one.
  • Repair or replace charger B’s current-control circuitry if its output characteristic has drifted.
  • Replace or repair charger B if it cannot deliver the specified current under the required load.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may start and then stop, or proceed more slowly than expected; the vehicle may also limit hybrid or electric operation. Avoid relying on normal charging until the fault is resolved, and stop if a high-voltage or overheating warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
