OBD-II fault code

P2E19: Intermediate Shaft Selection Actuator Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on the intermediate shaft selection actuator position sensor. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The intermediate shaft selection actuator position sensor reports shaft position to the control module so it can check actuator movement. This code sets when that signal is intermittent or erratic, such as when a connector loses contact under vibration or the sensor ground reference is unstable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may be on
  • Intermittent or erratic shifting or driveline response

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and graph live intermediate shaft position while selecting gears, looking for sudden jumps or dropouts.
  2. Inspect and reseat the intermediate shaft sensor connector, checking the locking tab, pin fit, corrosion, and harness strain.
  3. Check sensor ground and reference stability against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. While the vehicle is stationary and service-safe, gently move the harness while monitoring the sensor signal for interruptions.
  5. If the wiring and reference remain stable, test sensor output through the actuator's range and replace the sensor if it remains erratic.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the intermediate shaft sensor connector.
  • Clean corroded terminals or repair loose connector pins.
  • Repair a noisy ground connection or vibration-damaged harness section.
  • Replace the sensor if its signal continues to drop out with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the driveline response or gear changes are erratic, since the transmission may suddenly enter limited operation. If the fault comes and goes, restrict driving to what is necessary to reach a safe place for diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
