OBD-II fault code

P2E15: Intermediate Shaft Selection Actuator Position Sensor Circuit

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit fault on the intermediate shaft selection actuator position sensor. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The intermediate shaft selection actuator moves the transmission's intermediate shaft to the required position, and its position sensor reports that position to the control module. This code sets when the sensor circuit has a fault that prevents the module from relying on that feedback, without identifying a specific low, high, or intermittent condition.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Delayed or failed gear changes
  • Transmission may stay in one gear or enter a limited-operation mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare live intermediate shaft actuator position with the requested position during gear selection.
  2. Inspect the intermediate shaft selection sensor, its connector, and the nearby harness for damage, contamination, corrosion, or looseness.
  3. Check sensor power, ground, and signal continuity using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Test the sensor output as the actuator moves through its positions, checking for a missing or implausible signal.
  5. If the circuit checks pass, test the sensor and actuator assembly as specified by the manufacturer and replace the failed component.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a loose or contaminated sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor circuit connections.
  • Replace a failed intermediate shaft selection position sensor.
  • Clear the code and confirm actuator position feedback during gear selection.

Can I keep driving?

If gear changes are delayed, fail, or the transmission stays in one gear, avoid driving in traffic or on routes where you need reliable acceleration. Arrange prompt diagnosis; continued operation with unreliable intermediate shaft feedback can leave the transmission in limited operation.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
