OBD-II fault code

P2E16: Intermediate Shaft Selection Actuator Position Sensor Range/Performance

What it means

The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the intermediate shaft selection actuator position sensor. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The intermediate shaft selection actuator position sensor tells the control module where the actuator has positioned the transmission's intermediate shaft. This code sets when the reported position is outside the expected range or does not change as expected, even if the circuit is not simply reading low or high; sensor drift or displaced mounting can cause this mismatch.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor characteristic drifted
  2. Sensor mounting displaced
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Delayed or failed gear changes
  • Transmission may stay in one gear or enter a limited-operation mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare live intermediate shaft position with the requested position across gear selections.
  2. Inspect the sensor mounting and alignment for movement, damage, or signs it has shifted from its intended position.
  3. Check the sensor connector, wiring, supply, and ground for faults that could distort the reading.
  4. Observe the sensor output through the actuator's operating range and compare it with the manufacturer's specification for a smooth, plausible change.
  5. If the circuit is sound but readings remain out of range, test the sensor and actuator alignment and replace the sensor if it has drifted beyond specification.

Common fixes

  • Correct displaced sensor mounting or alignment according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged sensor connection.
  • Replace a sensor whose output has drifted outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Clear the code and verify position feedback across gear selections.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid normal driving if shifts are delayed or the transmission stays in one gear, since the control module may limit operation when it cannot confirm intermediate shaft position. If it still shifts normally, keep driving to a minimum and arrange diagnosis before the condition worsens.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
