OBD-II fault code

P2D32: Intake Manifold Tuning Valve Control Circuit Driver Current/Temperature Too High Bank 1

What it means

The output driver for the intake manifold tuning valve actuator on bank 1 reports current or junction temperature above its protection threshold.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The engine control module drives the Bank 1 intake manifold tuning-valve actuator and monitors the output driver's electrical load and temperature. P2D32 sets when that driver detects excessive current or heat, which can result from a jammed actuator or a control wire shorted to ground.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Tuning valve actuator jammed
  2. Control wire shorted to ground

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power or acceleration
  • Rough idle or hesitation

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and check whether the code is current or follows repeated Bank 1 tuning-valve commands.
  2. With the ignition off, inspect the Bank 1 tuning-valve mechanism for binding and its actuator connector and wiring for chafing, crushed insulation, corrosion, or a short to ground.
  3. Disconnect and inspect the actuator connector terminals for damage or contamination, following the vehicle's service precautions.
  4. Test the Bank 1 actuator circuit for shorts and excessive load using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specifications.
  5. If the wiring is sound, test the actuator for binding or an electrical fault and check the control module driver only after downstream causes are ruled out.

Common fixes

  • Repair wiring insulation damage or a control wire short to ground.
  • Clean or repair damaged Bank 1 actuator connector terminals.
  • Free a jammed Bank 1 tuning-valve mechanism.
  • Replace the Bank 1 actuator if it draws excessive current or fails testing.
  • Repair the control module driver only if circuit and actuator tests confirm the fault is internal.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration if the engine has reduced power or enters limited-power mode, and arrange diagnosis promptly because continued excessive current can damage the actuator circuit or control driver. Stop if the engine becomes difficult to control or loses power unpredictably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
