What it means
The required adaptation offset for the intake manifold tuning valve on bank 1 exceeds the calibrated learning window. Mechanism wear or sensor drift beyond compensation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The intake manifold tuning valve changes the intake path on Bank 1 to suit engine operating conditions, while the control module learns its normal position range. P2D31 sets when the correction needed to match the Bank 1 valve's position exceeds that learning range, which can indicate worn end-stops or a drifting position sensor.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Mechanism worn at end-stops
- Position sensor reference drifted
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power or acceleration
- Rough idle or hesitation
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and read Bank 1 tuning-valve command, position feedback, and any learned offset data available.
- Inspect the Bank 1 tuning valve, actuator connector, and linkage for looseness, wear, binding, or physical damage.
- Compare commanded and reported Bank 1 valve position through its operating range, if supported, and note whether the mismatch is consistent or occurs near an end-stop.
- Check the position sensor and actuator wiring for poor connections, shorts, or opens using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specifications.
- If the mechanism and wiring appear sound, test the position sensor and actuator and assess the valve's end-stop condition against the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair loose or damaged Bank 1 tuning-valve linkage.
- Clean or free a binding Bank 1 valve mechanism.
- Repair damaged actuator or position-sensor wiring and connectors.
- Replace the Bank 1 position sensor or actuator that fails testing.
- Replace a worn Bank 1 tuning-valve mechanism if its end-stops are out of specification.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid high-load driving if acceleration is reduced or the vehicle enters a limited-power mode, since the engine may not control intake airflow as intended. Arrange diagnosis soon, especially if rough idle or hesitation is worsening.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
