OBD-II fault code

P2CBF: PCV Heater B Control Circuit Low

What it means

The control circuit of PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) heater B reports a control circuit low condition. PCV line heater prevents oil mist freezing in cold weather.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

PCV heater B warms the positive crankcase ventilation line to help keep oil mist from freezing in cold weather. P2CBF sets when the control module sees an abnormally low signal in heater B’s control circuit, which may indicate a wire shorted to ground or a shorted heater element.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to ground
  2. Heater element shorted
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible rough running or crankcase ventilation warning in cold weather

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live heater commands to see whether the low-circuit fault occurs when heater B is switched on.
  2. Inspect heater B’s wiring and connector for chafing, pinched insulation, moisture, corrosion, or a short to ground.
  3. With the circuit isolated, test the heater B element for a short and compare the reading with the manufacturer’s specification.
  4. Check the control wire for unintended continuity to ground using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or poor contact that could distort the circuit reading.
  6. If the element and harness pass, verify the module’s control output and ground paths before replacing a module.

Common fixes

  • Repair heater B wiring that is shorted to ground.
  • Clean corroded connector pins and secure the connection.
  • Repair damaged or pinched insulation in the heater control harness.
  • Replace the PCV heater B element if it tests shorted.
  • Repair a confirmed fault in the module control circuit.

Can I keep driving?

You can generally drive if the engine runs normally, but the check-engine light will remain on and emissions performance may be affected. In freezing weather, a heater B fault can let the PCV line ice up and lead to rough running or crankcase ventilation problems.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
