OBD-II fault code

P053D: PCV Heater A Performance

What it means

The PCV heater on path A is electrically intact but does not deliver the expected thermal effect - hose temperature does not rise as commanded. Heater element aged or contact resistance increased.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The path A PCV heater warms the ventilation hose to limit ice buildup in cold weather. The engine control module monitors whether the hose or heater shows the expected thermal response when commanded on; P053D sets when the electrical circuit appears intact but the heating effect is inadequate.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. PCV heater element degraded or weak
  2. Poor electrical connection at the heater
  3. Heater wiring or control fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Possible rough idle or crankcase ventilation problems in cold weather

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and related codes, including ambient and engine temperatures, to see whether conditions allowed the heater performance test to run.
  2. Inspect the path A heater, connector, and wiring for damage, loose terminals, corrosion, or heat discoloration that could reduce current to the heater.
  3. Use scan-tool data or the manufacturer's test procedure to confirm the heater is being commanded on and to assess whether the hose temperature responds.
  4. Test the heater element and voltage drop across its connections under the specified conditions to find a weak element or high-resistance connection.
  5. Repair the confirmed cause, then verify the thermal response with the manufacturer's procedure or when suitable cold conditions allow.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the path A heater electrical connections.
  • Repair wiring or connector resistance that limits heater operation.
  • Replace the path A PCV heater if it fails the manufacturer's performance test.
  • Repair a confirmed control fault if the heater and its wiring meet specification.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, short-term driving may be possible, but cold-weather operation increases the chance of moisture freezing in the PCV hose. Have it repaired before prolonged use in freezing conditions to reduce the risk of a blocked breather and crankcase pressure buildup.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
