OBD-II fault code

P2CBE: PCV Heater B Control Circuit High

What it means

The control circuit of PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) heater B reports a control circuit high condition. PCV line heater prevents oil mist freezing in cold weather.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

PCV heater B warms the positive crankcase ventilation line in cold conditions to help prevent oil mist from freezing. P2CBE sets when the module detects an unexpectedly high signal in heater B’s control circuit, which can result from a wire shorted to power, an open heater, or poor connector contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to B+
  2. Open heater element
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible rough running or crankcase ventilation warning in cold weather

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live heater commands to establish when the circuit-high fault occurs.
  2. Inspect heater B’s connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, damaged insulation, or contact with a power wire.
  3. Check whether the heater element is open by testing it with the circuit isolated and comparing the result with the manufacturer’s specification.
  4. Test heater B’s control wire for a short to battery power using the wiring diagram and the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
  5. Check connector pin fit and voltage drop across suspect connections to find high contact resistance.
  6. If wiring, heater, and connections pass, verify the module’s control circuit before condemning the module.

Common fixes

  • Repair wiring shorted to a power feed.
  • Clean corroded heater B connector pins and restore proper pin contact.
  • Repair loose or damaged connector terminals.
  • Replace the PCV heater B element if it is open.
  • Repair the module control circuit if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is usually possible if the engine runs normally, though the check-engine light will stay on and emissions performance may be affected. In freezing weather, heater B may not keep the PCV line clear, increasing the chance of rough running or ventilation trouble.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
