OBD-II fault code

P2CA0: Fuel Pressure Regulator D Exceeded Control Limits - Pressure Too Low

What it means

Fuel pressure regulator D cannot maintain commanded pressure - actual rail pressure drops below the calibrated lower limit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Fuel pressure regulator D regulates fuel flow to help the rail reach the pressure requested by the control module. P2CA0 sets when measured rail pressure stays below the allowed range despite the module's control commands, often because the regulator is stuck open or fuel is escaping.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Leak in fuel rail or injector
  2. Regulator stuck open

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded with actual rail pressure, noting whether the drop occurred during startup or under load.
  2. Inspect the fuel rail, injectors, and visible fuel lines for leaks that could lower pressure.
  3. Check regulator D's connector and wiring for damage and inspect for a regulator that may be stuck open.
  4. Use a scan tool to watch actual pressure as commanded pressure changes under safe test conditions.
  5. Test regulator D and the fuel supply system against the manufacturer's specification if the basic checks show no cause.

Common fixes

  • Repair a confirmed leak at the fuel rail, injector, or line.
  • Clean and secure regulator D's connector or repair damaged wiring.
  • Replace regulator D if testing confirms it is stuck open or cannot regulate pressure.
  • Repair another confirmed supply-side fault preventing adequate rail pressure.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid high-load driving because low rail pressure can cause power loss or stalling, and the engine may become difficult to start. If it stalls repeatedly or fuel is leaking, stop driving and arrange a safe inspection.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
