OBD-II fault code

P228C: Fuel Pressure Regulator A Exceeded Control Limits - Pressure Too Low

What it means

Fuel Pressure Regulator A has exceeded its control limits because fuel pressure is too low. The code does not identify the underlying fault by itself.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Fuel Pressure Regulator A controls pressure in the fuel circuit monitored by the control module. P228C sets when pressure is too low and Regulator A has reached the limit of its ability to correct it; the code does not distinguish a weak supply from a regulator, restriction, or inaccurate sensor reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Weak or failing fuel pump
  2. Fuel-pressure regulator A leaking or stuck open
  3. Restricted fuel supply, such as a clogged filter
  4. Fuel-pressure sensor or wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded with measured fuel pressure during cranking, idle, and the conditions when power drops.
  2. Inspect Regulator A and the pressure-sensor connectors and wiring for damage or poor contact that could make the reported pressure too low.
  3. Check the fuel supply for a restricted filter, kinked line, or other obstruction, and look for leaks.
  4. Use supported scan-tool data or tests to see whether Regulator A responds as pressure is commanded to change.
  5. If the sensor signal is credible, test fuel pressure and pump delivery, then Regulator A, against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged pressure-sensor or Regulator A connection.
  • Replace a confirmed clogged fuel filter or clear a verified supply restriction.
  • Replace a weak fuel pump if its delivery test fails.
  • Repair or replace Regulator A if it leaks or cannot maintain pressure.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy acceleration and driving in situations where a stall would be dangerous; low fuel pressure can cause sudden power loss or stalling. Do not continue driving if it stalls or will not start reliably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
