What it means
The hybrid battery disable circuit reports a circuit high condition. Service disconnect signal cannot be read reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery disable circuit tells the hybrid control module whether the service disconnect is correctly connected. P2C98 sets when the circuit signal is higher than expected, so the module cannot reliably read the disconnect status and may restrict hybrid functions.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Pull-down resistor open
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check hybrid modules for related disable circuit, interlock, and contactor codes.
- Review live data for the disable circuit signal or status and compare it with the expected reading in the manufacturer's diagnostic information.
- With the high-voltage system made safe according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the signal wire for contact with a B+ source.
- Inspect the service disconnect signal connector for corrosion, poor pin fit, and wiring damage.
- Test for a short to B+ and check the pull-down resistor and circuit continuity as directed by the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire shorted to B+.
- Clean, secure, or repair corroded or loose connector terminals.
- Repair an open pull-down resistor circuit if testing confirms it.
- Replace a damaged disable circuit connector or wiring section.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid long trips if the vehicle has reduced power or charging issues, because hybrid operation may be restricted. Do not handle high-voltage components or the service disconnect unless trained and following the manufacturer's safety procedure.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
