What it means
The required adaptation offset for throttle actuator B exceeds the calibrated learning window. Mechanical wear, deposit build-up, or sensor drift beyond compensation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Throttle actuator B controls a throttle position channel that the engine control module monitors alongside its requested position and feedback. P2C9A sets when the learned correction for actuator B exceeds the allowed range, which can happen if deposits impede the throttle plate or its position signal has drifted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Deposits on throttle plate or bore
- TPS reference drifted
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
- Hesitation or surging
- Idle too high or too low
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan for related throttle actuator B, throttle position, and intake air codes.
- Compare commanded throttle movement with actuator B feedback in live data, noting whether the mismatch occurs at idle or through a controlled sweep.
- Inspect the throttle plate and bore for deposits or binding that could make actuator B require excessive correction.
- Check actuator B and its position feedback wiring and connector pins for damage, looseness, or contamination.
- If visual checks do not explain the fault, test actuator B's sensor reference and feedback circuit and perform the manufacturer-specified relearn.
Common fixes
- Clean throttle plate and bore deposits with the manufacturer's approved method.
- Repair damaged or loose actuator B or feedback wiring connections.
- Correct a position sensor reference or feedback fault confirmed by circuit tests.
- Complete the specified throttle adaptation or relearn after repair.
Can I keep driving?
If throttle response is reduced, surging, or the vehicle has entered limp mode, avoid high-speed and heavy-traffic driving and arrange repair soon. Unpredictable throttle response or an unstable idle can make it difficult to maintain a safe speed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
