What it means
The hybrid battery disable circuit reports a circuit low condition. Service disconnect signal cannot be read reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery disable circuit reports the service disconnect status to the hybrid control module. P2C97 sets when the signal is pulled below its expected range, so the module cannot reliably confirm the disconnect and may limit hybrid operation.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Service disconnect switch shorted
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan hybrid modules for related disable circuit, interlock, or contactor faults.
- Check live data for the disable circuit status and compare it with the service disconnect's actual state using the manufacturer's information.
- With the high-voltage system made safe using the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the disable signal wire for damage or contact with ground.
- Inspect the service disconnect switch and connector for damage, contamination, or corrosion that could pull down the signal.
- Test the signal wire for a short to ground and check connector contact resistance according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire shorted to ground.
- Clean and secure corroded disable circuit connector terminals.
- Repair or replace a damaged service disconnect switch if it tests shorted.
- Repair wiring or connector resistance that pulls the signal below specification.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if reduced power or charging problems are present, since hybrid operation may be restricted. Do not handle the service disconnect or high-voltage wiring unless trained and following the manufacturer's safety procedure.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
