What it means
The hybrid battery disable circuit reports a circuit/open condition. Service disconnect signal cannot be read reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery disable circuit carries a signal that lets the control module determine whether the hybrid battery service disconnect is correctly connected. P2C96 sets when the module detects an open circuit, so it cannot reliably confirm the disconnect signal and may restrict hybrid operation.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in disable signal wire
- Service disconnect switch failed open
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan hybrid modules for related service disconnect, interlock, and contactor codes.
- Check live data for the battery disable or service disconnect status and note whether it changes when the fault is present.
- With the high-voltage system made safe under the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the disable signal wiring and connectors for a break, loose fit, or damage.
- Check that connector terminals are seated and look for a pushed-back pin in the disable circuit connector.
- Using the manufacturer's procedure, test continuity through the disable signal wire and service disconnect switch to locate the open.
Common fixes
- Repair an open or damaged disable signal wire.
- Reseat or replace a pushed-back connector terminal.
- Secure or repair a loose connector in the service disconnect signal circuit.
- Replace a failed service disconnect switch if testing confirms it is open.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the vehicle is in reduced-power mode or cannot confirm the battery disconnect status; hybrid propulsion or charging may be limited. Do not handle high-voltage components or the service disconnect unless trained and following the manufacturer's safety procedure.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
