OBD-II fault code

P2C89: Hybrid/EV Battery System Precharge Current Too High

What it means

During the HV battery precharge sequence, the inrush current exceeds the calibrated maximum. Indicates short on the DC-link side or insufficient precharge resistance.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Before connecting the high-voltage battery to the vehicle's DC link, the hybrid system uses a precharge circuit to charge the inverter-side capacitors gradually. P2C89 sets when current during that sequence exceeds the calibrated maximum, which can indicate a short on the DC-link side or a precharge resistor that is not limiting current correctly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short on DC-link (capacitor or load)
  2. Precharge resistor shorted
  3. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and read hybrid-system codes and precharge status with a compatible scan tool to confirm the fault occurs during the connection sequence.
  2. Check for recent inverter, charger, or high-voltage battery repairs and visible damage or moisture around those areas without touching high-voltage components.
  3. Have a qualified hybrid technician inspect the precharge circuit wiring, connectors, and fuse or contactor area using the manufacturer's safety procedures.
  4. Have the DC-link side and its capacitors tested for a short using the equipment and method specified by the manufacturer.
  5. If the DC-link side passes, test precharge resistor operation and review battery voltage and cell-balance data to identify the source of excessive current.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or moisture-affected precharge wiring or connectors.
  • Replace a precharge resistor that fails the manufacturer's test.
  • Repair or replace the DC-link component or capacitor confirmed to be shorted.
  • Repair a battery-related fault if testing identifies cell imbalance as a contributing cause.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive or charge if the vehicle reports a hybrid-system fault, reduced power, or a charging problem; arrange service and follow its warning instructions. The precharge circuit carries high voltage, so do not touch or open its components.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
