What it means
The hybrid control module detects a system-wide isolation warning across multiple HV components. General insulation degradation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The hybrid control module checks electrical isolation across the high-voltage system, including the battery and other connected components. P2C88 is a system-wide warning that isolation is degraded across more than one area, which may result from several minor insulation faults or moisture affecting multiple components.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Multiple low-grade insulation faults
- High ambient humidity affecting multiple components
- Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and read the hybrid system's isolation status and related codes to see whether the warning followed wet conditions or a specific operating event.
- Check for recent water exposure, underbody damage, or repairs involving high-voltage components without touching their cables or connectors.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician inspect external high-voltage connectors, cable routing, and component enclosures using the manufacturer's safety procedures.
- Have isolation measured across the system and its serviceable sections with the manufacturer's specified equipment and procedure.
- If external sections pass, have the battery pack's isolation and cell-balance data checked to identify an internal contribution.
Common fixes
- Dry and reseal moisture-affected connectors or enclosures where the manufacturer permits repair.
- Repair or replace external cables or components with confirmed insulation damage.
- Repair a battery-pack isolation or cell-balance fault if testing identifies it as part of the system-wide warning.
Can I keep driving?
Do not drive or charge if the vehicle shows reduced power, a high-voltage warning, or charging trouble; follow the vehicle's instructions and arrange hybrid-system service. System-wide isolation degradation can create an electric-shock hazard, so leave high-voltage components untouched.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
