What it means
The hybrid control module detects an early-warning external isolation degradation. Pre-failure indicator for HV cable insulation against chassis.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The hybrid control module monitors insulation on high-voltage components outside the battery pack, including cables and connectors. P2C87 is an early warning that external isolation is degrading, often due to moisture or aged insulation, before the system reaches a more severe fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Moisture in HV connector
- HV cable insulation aged
- Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and read hybrid isolation status and related codes with a compatible scan tool to establish when the warning appeared.
- Check for recent water exposure, collision damage, or repairs near external high-voltage cables and connectors without touching them.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician inspect external cable insulation and connector seals using the manufacturer's safety procedure.
- Have external high-voltage insulation resistance measured with the specified equipment and compare it with the manufacturer's limits.
- If external components test within limits, review battery-pack isolation and cell-balance data to check for a separate pack concern.
Common fixes
- Dry and reseal a moisture-affected external high-voltage connector where the manufacturer's procedure allows.
- Replace aged, cracked, or chafed external high-voltage cable or connector components.
- Repair a confirmed pack-related isolation or cell-balance fault if testing points to the battery pack.
Can I keep driving?
Arrange prompt hybrid-system diagnosis, and avoid driving or charging if power is reduced or a high-voltage warning appears. Do not touch high-voltage cables or connectors; insulation faults can create an electric-shock hazard.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
