OBD-II fault code

P2C4D: Clutch Actuator Position Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The clutch actuator position sensor reports a circuit high condition. Clutch engagement state cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The clutch actuator position sensor supplies the transmission controller with a position signal for clutch engagement. P2C4D sets when that signal is above its expected range, which can result from a signal wire shorted to battery voltage, an open sensor, or a poor connector contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open position sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live position data to verify that the sensor signal is high when the code sets.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and signal-wire routing for corrosion, an open connection, damaged insulation, or contact with a B+ wire.
  3. Following the vehicle's isolation procedure, test the signal wire for a short to B+ and check continuity through the circuit.
  4. Check sensor power, ground, and connector terminal fit to distinguish an open sensor input from a high-resistance connection.
  5. If the wiring and terminals pass, test the position sensor with the manufacturer's specified procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a signal wire shorted to B+.
  • Repair an open sensor wire or connection.
  • Clean or replace corroded terminals and restore proper connector contact.
  • Replace the clutch actuator position sensor if it is open or produces an out-of-range high signal with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the transmission shifts harshly, misses gears, or the clutch slips, since incorrect position data can disrupt clutch engagement and trigger limp mode. Stop if the vehicle cannot shift or move in a controlled way.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
