OBD-II fault code

P2C4B: Clutch Actuator Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The clutch actuator position sensor reports a circuit range/performance condition. Clutch engagement state cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The clutch actuator position sensor tells the transmission controller how far the clutch actuator has moved. P2C4B sets when the signal is present but its range or relationship to actuator movement is implausible, which can happen if the sensor has drifted or the linkage is worn.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor offset drifted
  2. Linkage between sensor and actuator worn
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare live clutch position with commanded position during the shifts that trigger the code.
  2. Inspect the sensor mount, connector, and linkage between the sensor and clutch actuator for looseness, wear, or movement that could create an offset.
  3. Check sensor wiring, power, ground, and signal integrity so an electrical fault is not mistaken for a range problem.
  4. Observe sensor output across the actuator's specified travel and compare it with the manufacturer's expected range and progression.
  5. If the linkage moves correctly and the circuit is sound, verify sensor calibration or condition using the vehicle's specified procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose sensor mount or repair worn linkage between the sensor and actuator.
  • Repair poor wiring or connector contact affecting the position signal.
  • Replace the clutch actuator position sensor if its output has drifted outside the specified range.
  • Perform the specified sensor or actuator calibration after mechanical or sensor repair, if required for that vehicle.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving if the clutch slips, shudders, or shifts harshly, since clutch wear or loss of engagement can worsen and the transmission may enter limp mode. Have the vehicle moved safely if it cannot select or hold gears reliably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
