What it means
The clutch actuator position sensor reports a circuit low condition. Clutch engagement state cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The clutch actuator position sensor reports clutch actuator movement to the transmission controller. P2C4C sets when the sensor circuit signal is below its expected range, so the controller may interpret the clutch position as lower than it is or lose a usable position reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame and live sensor data to confirm the clutch actuator position signal is low when the fault occurs.
- Inspect the signal wire and sensor connector for a short to ground, damaged insulation, corrosion, or poor terminal contact.
- With the circuit isolated as specified, test the signal wire for a short to ground.
- Check sensor power and ground and inspect connector terminals for corrosion or high resistance that could pull down the signal.
- If the harness passes, test the sensor for an internal short using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire shorted to ground.
- Clean or replace corroded or damaged sensor connector terminals.
- Repair poor sensor power or ground connections.
- Replace the clutch actuator position sensor if its signal remains low with a sound circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if shifts are delayed, missing, or the clutch slips, because the transmission may lose reliable clutch control or lock into a gear. Stop safely if the vehicle cannot engage or hold a gear predictably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
