OBD-II fault code

P2C4E: Clutch Actuator Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The clutch actuator position sensor reports a circuit intermittent/erratic condition. Clutch engagement state cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The clutch actuator position sensor reports how far the actuator has moved, helping the transmission control module judge clutch engagement during shifts. This code sets when the sensor circuit signal becomes unstable or erratic, so the module cannot track actuator position consistently.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live clutch actuator position while the fault is present to see whether the reading jumps or drops out.
  2. Inspect the clutch actuator position sensor connector and wiring for a loose fit, damaged insulation, corrosion, or signs of movement.
  3. With the vehicle safely stationary, gently move the harness while watching the sensor reading to check for vibration-sensitive contact loss.
  4. Check the sensor ground reference and its connections for an unstable reading, using the vehicle manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. Test the sensor circuit and sensor operation against the manufacturer's specification before replacing parts.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the clutch actuator position sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or terminals at the sensor connector.
  • Restore a sound ground connection if testing confirms a poor or noisy ground.
  • Replace the clutch actuator position sensor if its signal remains erratic with sound wiring and ground.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid unnecessary driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, or missing, or if the transmission enters limp mode; the vehicle could lose reliable gear changes. If it must be moved, keep the trip short and stop if the clutch slips or shudders.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
