OBD-II fault code

P2BB6: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 6 Circuit

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit fault on the engine coolant temperature sensor 6. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Engine coolant temperature sensor 6 provides the ECM with a temperature signal used for engine control and cooling-system decisions. P2BB6 sets when the sensor 6 circuit has a fault that makes its reading unreliable, though the code alone does not say whether the sensor, wiring, or connection failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Cooling fan runs constantly or not at all
  • Cabin heater weak or excessively hot
  • Possible long warm-up time or hard cold start

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live data for coolant-temperature sensor 6, noting whether its reading is missing or implausible.
  2. With the engine cold, compare sensor 6's reading with ambient temperature and other available coolant-temperature signals.
  3. Locate sensor 6 using service information and inspect its connector and harness for disconnection, corrosion, or damage.
  4. Check the sensor 6 circuit for continuity, shorts, and a sound ground reference using the manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. Test sensor 6 against the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the circuit or sensor itself is faulty.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair damaged sensor 6 wiring or terminals.
  • Repair a confirmed short, open, or poor ground in the sensor 6 circuit.
  • Replace sensor 6 if it fails its electrical test.
  • Clear the code and confirm the sensor 6 reading remains plausible after repair.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only while monitoring for overheating or a temperature warning, and stop safely if either occurs because the ECM may not have a reliable sensor 6 reading. Avoid long trips until cooling-fan operation and temperature reporting are confirmed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
