What it means
The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the engine coolant temperature sensor 6. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Engine coolant temperature sensor 6 reports temperature to the ECM for engine and cooling-system control. P2BB7 sets when sensor 6's signal is electrically plausible but behaves outside the expected range or fails to track temperature correctly, which can indicate sensor drift or incorrect mounting.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor mounting displaced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Cooling fan runs constantly or not at all
- Cabin heater weak or excessively hot
- Possible long warm-up time or hard cold start
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live data for sensor 6 across cold start and warm-up to identify a reading that changes too slowly or does not match engine temperature.
- Compare sensor 6 with ambient temperature when cold and with other available coolant-temperature readings as the engine warms.
- Locate sensor 6 using service information and check that it is correctly seated and that its connector and wiring are secure.
- Inspect for conditions that could make sensor 6 report unrepresentative temperature, including poor mounting or a lack of proper coolant contact.
- Test sensor 6's response through temperature change against the manufacturer's specification before replacing it.
Common fixes
- Correct sensor 6 mounting or seating if it is displaced.
- Repair a loose or damaged sensor 6 connector or wiring.
- Replace sensor 6 if its temperature response is outside the specified range.
- Clear the code and confirm sensor 6 tracks warm-up normally.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid long or demanding drives if sensor 6's reading does not track engine temperature, especially if the cooling fan behaves abnormally. Stop if the engine overheats, since incorrect temperature reporting can interfere with cooling control.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
