OBD-II fault code

P2BA9: NOx Exceedence — Insufficient Reagent

What it means

The SCR system has detected that NOx emissions exceed the legal limit and the cause is traced to insufficient AdBlue/DEF dosing. Modern emission regulations require this fault to be reported separately so that operator-induced misuse (running an empty tank, diluting the fluid) is recorded.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The SCR system measures NOx and tracks DEF dosing to check whether enough reductant is being supplied. P2BA9 sets when NOx remains above the limit and dosing is judged insufficient, which can follow repeated empty-tank operation, unsuitable fluid, or weak pump delivery.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. DEF tank repeatedly run empty
  2. Diluted or contaminated DEF
  3. Dosing pump output below spec

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data, DEF quality and level information, dosing history, and related SCR codes to determine whether low supply, poor fluid, or delivery trouble is indicated.
  2. Check the tank level and confirm the fluid is the correct DEF/AdBlue and has not been diluted or contaminated.
  3. Inspect the DEF tank, supply lines, and injector for leaks, crystallized deposits, blockage, or damage.
  4. Check pump output and commanded dosing with the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure, comparing results with its specification.
  5. If fluid and delivery are correct, evaluate NOx sensor readings and SCR conversion before attributing the fault to the catalyst.

Common fixes

  • Refill an empty tank with the correct DEF/AdBlue.
  • Drain and replace contaminated or diluted DEF according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Clear a restricted injector or repair a leaking or damaged supply line.
  • Repair or replace a dosing pump confirmed to deliver below specification.
  • Correct any confirmed NOx sensor or SCR fault and verify the dosing response.

Can I keep driving?

Address the warning promptly and heed any restart countdown or power limit. Continued driving with insufficient or unsuitable DEF can keep NOx emissions high and may eventually prevent restarting.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
