What it means
NOx emissions are above the legal threshold and the ECU isolates the cause to interruption of reductant dosing. The injection valve, pump, or supply line is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The SCR system must deliver DEF through a pump and injector to reduce exhaust NOx. P2BA8 sets when the ECU detects excessive NOx and identifies an interruption in reductant delivery, such as a blocked injector, inadequate pump output, or a supply-line problem.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Reductant injection valve clogged
- Reductant pump output insufficient
Symptoms
- Check engine light or NOx warning on
- AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
- Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and SCR, DEF pressure, and dosing-related codes to see whether delivery stopped during a commanded dosing event.
- Check the DEF level and inspect the tank, lines, and connections for leaks, crystallized deposits, kinks, or visible damage.
- Inspect the reductant injector and its connector for crystallization, blockage, corrosion, or wiring damage.
- Use the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to check whether the pump builds and maintains the specified delivery pressure.
- Test injector operation and its electrical circuit as directed by the manufacturer, then confirm dosing and NOx response after repairs.
Common fixes
- Correct a low DEF level or a supply-line kink or leak.
- Clean or replace a clogged reductant injector if testing confirms restriction.
- Repair damaged injector or pump wiring and connectors.
- Replace a pump confirmed to have inadequate output.
- Clear the fault and verify dosing using the manufacturer's procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid heavy loads because the vehicle may reduce power or begin a restart countdown while SCR dosing is interrupted. Continued use raises NOx emissions and may lead to a no-start restriction.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
