OBD-II fault code

P2BA7: NOx Exceedence - Empty Reagent Tank

What it means

NOx emissions are above the legal threshold and the ECU isolates the cause to an empty reductant tank. SCR cannot dose AdBlue/DEF.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The SCR system needs DEF, also called AdBlue, to reduce NOx in the exhaust. P2BA7 sets when the ECU attributes excessive NOx to an empty reductant tank and cannot maintain dosing; some vehicles then display a restart countdown.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. DEF/AdBlue tank empty - refill required
  2. Level sensor reads empty incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Check the dashboard level and warning messages, then read freeze-frame data and SCR-related codes to confirm the empty-tank condition.
  2. Verify that the tank contains the correct DEF and refill it if it is empty, following the vehicle instructions.
  3. Allow the level reading to update as specified by the manufacturer and check whether the warning or countdown clears.
  4. If the tank is not empty or the warning persists after refilling, inspect the level-sensor wiring and connector for damage or corrosion.
  5. Compare the tank-level signal with the manufacturer's specification and test the sensor and associated circuit before replacing parts.

Common fixes

  • Refill the tank with the correct DEF/AdBlue if empty.
  • Repair a damaged level-sensor connector or wiring.
  • Replace a level sensor confirmed to report empty incorrectly.
  • Clear or reset the inducement only using the manufacturer's procedure after the fault is corrected.

Can I keep driving?

Refill promptly and do not ignore an SCR warning or restart countdown; the vehicle may eventually prevent restarting. Driving with an empty tank leaves NOx uncontrolled and can bring on a power limitation.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
