What it means
The ECM detects that the exhaust gas composition reaching the particulate filter (feedgas) deviates from the calibrated profile. Soot input rate cannot be modelled correctly, affecting regen scheduling.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The ECM estimates the exhaust entering the diesel particulate filter using exhaust-composition and temperature information to predict soot loading and regeneration needs. P2BA5 sets when that pre-DPF feedgas information does not match the calibrated profile, so soot production or regeneration scheduling may be estimated incorrectly.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Exhaust leak upstream of DPF
- EGT sensor pre-DPF drift
Symptoms
- Check engine light or DPF warning light on
- Power loss / limp mode
- Increased fuel consumption
- Failed forced regeneration attempts
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and DPF soot-load, regeneration, and pre-DPF exhaust-temperature live data to identify when the feedgas mismatch and power limitation began.
- Inspect the exhaust from the engine to the DPF for leaks, loose joints, or soot traces that could alter the gas reaching the filter.
- Check the pre-DPF exhaust-gas-temperature sensor, connector, and wiring for damage or a reading that is implausible when cold or during warm-up.
- Compare the pre-DPF temperature sensor with other exhaust-temperature readings during a cold start and warm-up, using the manufacturer's specification.
- Review soot-load and regeneration history, and check for related air, fuel, or sensor faults before attempting another regeneration.
Common fixes
- Repair an exhaust leak ahead of the DPF.
- Repair a damaged pre-DPF temperature-sensor connector or wiring.
- Replace a confirmed drifting pre-DPF exhaust-temperature sensor.
- Correct an underlying engine air or fuel fault that is producing abnormal soot.
- Carry out a regeneration only after the cause is corrected and the manufacturer's conditions are met.
Can I keep driving?
With power loss or a DPF warning, avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips; the filter may load with soot and the vehicle may limit power further. Do not repeatedly force regeneration attempts while the feedgas or temperature readings may be wrong.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
