OBD-II fault code

P2BA3: Starter/Generator Mechanical Performance

What it means

The hybrid control module detects that the integrated starter/generator does not deliver the expected mechanical torque or speed for the commanded operation. Belt slippage, bearing wear, or coupling fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The integrated starter/generator starts the engine and can also provide electrical charging or hybrid assistance. The hybrid control module compares its speed or torque response with what it commanded, and P2BA3 sets when the mechanical response is inadequate, such as from belt slip or bearing wear.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Drive belt slipping or worn
  2. Starter/generator bearing worn

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Slow or difficult engine starting
  • Reduced hybrid power or charging performance

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review starter/generator command, speed, and charging status with a scan tool to identify when the response was weak.
  2. Check the 12-volt battery condition and charging warnings, since low system voltage can affect starting and charging performance.
  3. With the engine off, inspect the starter/generator drive belt for wear, looseness, glazing, or contamination.
  4. Listen for abnormal bearing noise and inspect the starter/generator mounting and belt path for visible damage.
  5. If belt condition is sound, test the starter/generator mechanical and electrical response using the manufacturer's procedure and specifications.

Common fixes

  • Correct belt contamination or alignment problems and replace a worn or slipping drive belt.
  • Repair a loose starter/generator mounting or damaged belt-path component.
  • Replace the starter/generator if bearing wear or inadequate mechanical response is confirmed.
  • Repair related charging or battery faults found during diagnosis.

Can I keep driving?

If starting is slow or hybrid power or charging is reduced, avoid unnecessary trips and arrange prompt diagnosis; the vehicle could fail to restart or lose charging support. Stop driving if a charging warning, unusual mechanical noise, or sudden loss of power occurs.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
