OBD-II fault code

P2BA1: Coolant Pump D Underspeed

What it means

Coolant pump D reports a underspeed condition. Coolant circulation through the affected loop cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Coolant pump D circulates coolant through its assigned loop, and the control module checks that its speed matches the command. P2BA1 sets when pump D runs below the expected speed, potentially from binding or low supply voltage under load.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Mechanical load increased (binding)
  2. Supply voltage low under load

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Coolant temperature warning or rising temperature gauge
  • Reduced engine power

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and compare pump D's commanded and reported speed with coolant temperatures and pump status.
  2. Identify pump D and its loop from service information, then check coolant level and look for leaks or visible flow restrictions.
  3. Inspect pump D's connector, fuse, and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, chafing, or heat damage.
  4. Command pump D on with an available scan-tool test and watch whether its speed follows the request.
  5. Measure pump D's supply under load and check for mechanical binding, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair pump D's loose or damaged connector and wiring.
  • Restore coolant level or correct a confirmed restriction in pump D's loop.
  • Repair a supply or ground fault that causes voltage to fall under load.
  • Replace pump D if it remains underspeed or binds with a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

If the coolant temperature warning appears or the gauge rises, stop safely and switch off the engine to prevent overheating. If temperature stays normal, limit driving and arrange prompt diagnosis because pump D may not circulate coolant adequately when demand increases.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
