What it means
The engine coolant pump is mechanically stuck or has stalled. Coolant circulation through the engine is severely reduced or absent.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The engine coolant pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator, and the control module monitors whether it operates when commanded. P2BA2 sets when the engine pump is mechanically stuck or stalled, so engine coolant flow is severely reduced or absent.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pump impeller jammed by debris
- Motor seized
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Engine overheating
- Heater blowing cool air
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and coolant temperature with a scan tool, and confirm whether the temperature gauge or warning indicates overheating.
- With the engine fully cool, check coolant level and look for leaks that could explain poor circulation.
- Inspect the engine coolant pump's connector and wiring for visible damage or loose connections.
- Use an available scan-tool command test and observe whether the pump responds; check for signs of circulation only when safe.
- If the circuit is functioning but the pump does not run, inspect for a jammed impeller or seized motor and compare checks with the manufacturer's service information.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose or damaged engine coolant pump connector or wiring.
- Correct coolant loss and repair any leak found.
- Clear a confirmed obstruction in the pump or coolant path.
- Replace the engine coolant pump if it remains stuck or stalled.
Can I keep driving?
Do not continue driving with an overheating engine or a temperature warning; stop safely and switch off the engine, since severe overheating can cause major engine damage. Never open the cooling system while hot; arrange recovery if the temperature does not return to normal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
