What it means
Coolant pump B reports a underspeed condition. Coolant circulation through the affected loop cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Coolant pump B circulates coolant through its assigned loop, and the control module monitors whether the pump reaches the commanded speed. P2B9F sets when pump B runs slower than expected, which can reduce circulation because of binding or inadequate supply under load.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Mechanical load increased (binding)
- Supply voltage low under load
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Coolant temperature warning or rising temperature gauge
- Reduced engine power
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare pump B's commanded and reported speed with coolant temperature and pump status on a scan tool.
- Identify pump B and its loop from service information, then check coolant level and look for a visible restriction or leak.
- Inspect pump B's connector, wiring, fuse, and ground for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
- If scan-tool commands are available, operate pump B and observe whether its speed changes consistently with the command.
- Measure pump B's supply under load and check for mechanical binding, comparing circuit and speed results with the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair a poor pump B connector, supply wire, or ground connection.
- Restore the specified coolant level and correct any confirmed restriction in pump B's loop.
- Correct low electrical supply under load.
- Replace pump B if it binds or remains below commanded speed with a sound circuit.
Can I keep driving?
If a coolant temperature warning appears or the gauge rises, stop safely and switch off the engine; reduced flow can lead to overheating. If temperature stays normal, limit driving and arrange prompt diagnosis, since pump B may not maintain circulation under load.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
