OBD-II fault code

P28EB: Shift Motor Position Not Learned

What it means

The TCM has not learned the end-stop calibration for the shift motor. Gear positions cannot be commanded with full precision until adaptation completes.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The shift motor moves the transmission mechanism, and the TCM must learn the motor's end-stop positions to command gears accurately. P28EB sets when that position adaptation has not been completed or retained, such as after power loss or replacement of the shift motor, so the TCM lacks learned reference points.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Adaptation lost after battery disconnect or TCM reset
  2. Shift motor replaced without learn procedure

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and stored codes, and confirm whether the code appeared after a battery disconnect, TCM reset, or shift motor replacement.
  2. Use live data to see whether learned end-stop values or adaptation status are missing, incomplete, or not accepted.
  3. Inspect the shift motor connector and related wiring for faults that could prevent the TCM from completing the learning process.
  4. Confirm the shift mechanism moves freely and the transmission is in the required conditions specified by the manufacturer for the learn procedure.
  5. If no circuit or mechanical fault is present, perform the manufacturer's shift motor position learn procedure with a suitable scan tool and verify that adaptation completes.

Common fixes

  • Complete the manufacturer's shift motor position learning procedure when adaptation was lost after a reset or battery disconnect.
  • Repair wiring or connector faults that prevent the TCM from reading shift motor position during learning.
  • Correct a binding or obstructed shift mechanism that prevents end-stop learning.
  • Replace a failed shift motor or sensor only if diagnosis shows it cannot provide valid feedback for the learn procedure.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if gear selection is uncertain, shifts are missing, or the transmission is in limp mode; the TCM has not established the motor's position references. If shifts remain normal, limit driving and have the required adaptation completed promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
