What it means
The required adaptation offset for the shift motor position sensor exceeds the calibrated learning window. Sensor or mechanism out of nominal range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The shift motor position sensor reports the motor's position so the TCM can learn its end stops and control gear selection. P28EC sets when the offset needed to match the sensor feedback to the expected range exceeds the TCM's allowed learning window, which can indicate shifted mechanical end stops or sensor reference drift.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Mechanical wear shifted end-stops
- Sensor reference drifted
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and adaptation data to confirm the learned offset has reached or exceeded its allowed limit.
- Inspect the shift motor and linkage for wear, looseness, damage, or a change in end-stop position that could shift the sensor's reference.
- Check the sensor mounting, connector, and wiring for looseness or signal problems that could make the measured position appear offset.
- Use a scan tool to observe commanded motor movement and sensor feedback through the manufacturer's learning procedure, noting whether the error is consistent or intermittent.
- If wiring and mechanical movement are sound, test sensor reference and alignment against the manufacturer's specification and replace the sensor only if its drift is confirmed.
Common fixes
- Repair worn or loose shift mechanism components that have moved the end stops.
- Secure or correctly align the position sensor according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Repair connector or wiring faults that distort the position reading.
- Replace the position sensor if its reference has drifted beyond the specified learning range.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if shifts are slipping, missing, or the transmission is in limp mode, as the TCM cannot calibrate the shift motor within its allowed range. If it shifts normally, minimize use and arrange diagnosis before the position error leads to unreliable gear selection.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
