What it means
Voltage on the shift motor position sensor signal line is below the expected window. Wire shorted to ground or sensor short.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The shift motor position sensor reports rotor position so the TCM can confirm the transmission mechanism reaches the commanded gear position. P28E9 sets when the signal voltage falls below the expected range, commonly because the signal wire is shorted to ground or the sensor itself is internally shorted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live data to check whether the position signal stays low or drops low during a shift command.
- Inspect the position sensor connector and harness for chafing, crushed insulation, corrosion, or loose terminals that could pull the signal to ground.
- Use the wiring diagram to test the signal wire for a short to ground, isolating the circuit as directed by the manufacturer's procedure.
- Check sensor supply and ground integrity and test the signal circuit for continuity and shorts against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring and terminals pass, test the sensor output during commanded shift motor movement; replace the sensor only if its output confirms an internal short or out-of-range signal.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed or crushed signal wiring that is contacting ground.
- Clean or replace corroded or loose sensor connector terminals.
- Restore a sound sensor ground or repair a shorted signal circuit.
- Replace the shift motor position sensor if its signal remains low with the circuit verified.
Can I keep driving?
Do not continue driving if the transmission is slipping, missing shifts, or stuck in limp mode; a low position signal can prevent reliable gear control. If operation seems normal, drive only as needed and arrange diagnosis soon because shifting can deteriorate.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
