OBD-II fault code

P28E8: Shift Motor Position Sensor Circuit High

What it means

Voltage on the shift motor position sensor signal line is above the expected window. Wire shorted to B+ or sensor open.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The shift motor position sensor tells the TCM where the transmission shift motor rotor is during gear changes. P28E8 sets when the sensor signal voltage is higher than the TCM's expected range, which can happen if the signal wire is shorted to battery voltage or the sensor circuit is open.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open position sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live transmission data to see whether the position signal is high continuously or only during a shift command.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, pin fit problems, or contact with a power feed.
  3. Use the wiring diagram to check whether the signal wire is shorted to battery voltage, with the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer.
  4. Check the sensor supply, ground, and signal circuit continuity against the manufacturer's specification; an open sensor or high-resistance terminal can also hold the signal high.
  5. If the harness checks out, test the position sensor output at the sensor and TCM during commanded movement and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring where the position signal is contacting a power feed.
  • Clean or replace corroded or loose sensor connector terminals.
  • Repair an open circuit or terminal with excessive resistance.
  • Replace the shift motor position sensor if it remains open or its output is outside specification.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the transmission shifts harshly, slips, or has entered limp mode, because the TCM may not know the shift motor position reliably. If it still shifts normally, keep trips short and gentle and have the fault diagnosed promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
