OBD-II fault code

P2857: Clutch A Pressure Engagement Performance/Too Low

What it means

Clutch A engagement pressure is below the calibrated minimum. Slip during launch and torque transfer reduced.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Clutch A's hydraulic circuit applies pressure to transfer engine torque, and the transmission control module checks whether engagement pressure meets its calibrated minimum. P2857 sets when Clutch A engagement pressure is too low, which can let the clutch slip during launch or torque transfer.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Hydraulic pump output pressure low
  2. Pressure regulator characteristic drift

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save the transmission freeze-frame and review live Clutch A pressure during engagement to confirm that it falls below the expected target.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, and look for leaks that could reduce hydraulic supply.
  3. Inspect the hydraulic pump and pressure-regulator connections for leaks, damage, or loose fittings.
  4. Use a transmission-capable scan tool and the manufacturer's test procedure to compare pump output pressure and Clutch A engagement pressure.
  5. If pump output is within specification, test the pressure regulator and Clutch A hydraulic path for drift, restriction, or leakage.

Common fixes

  • Correct low fluid level and repair any external hydraulic leaks.
  • Repair or replace a confirmed weak hydraulic pump.
  • Repair or replace the pressure regulator if its output is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair a confirmed restriction or leak in the Clutch A hydraulic circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration, steep climbs, and towing while Clutch A is slipping; low engagement pressure can overheat and damage the clutch. Stop driving if the vehicle loses drive or shifts into limp mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
