OBD-II fault code

P284A: Shift Fork B Stuck

What it means

Shift fork B cannot leave its current engagement position when the actuator commands movement. Mechanical jam or actuator without travel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift fork B moves a gear-engaging sleeve inside the transmission when the control module commands a shift. The module monitors fork movement and sets this code when fork B remains in its current position instead of travelling as commanded, which can result from a mechanical jam or an actuator that does not move it.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift fork mechanically jammed
  2. Synchroniser teeth damaged

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame and transmission live data to identify the shift request when fork B stopped moving and whether limp mode was commanded.
  2. Check the transmission fluid condition and level using the vehicle manufacturer's procedure, since a problem inside the transmission can interfere with fork movement.
  3. Inspect accessible fork B actuator wiring and connectors for damage or poor connection that could prevent the commanded movement.
  4. Use a suitable scan-tool actuator test, if supported, to compare the fork B command with its reported position.
  5. If the electrical command is present but fork B does not travel, inspect the fork and synchroniser assembly for a mechanical jam or damaged teeth.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or poorly connected fork B actuator wiring or connectors.
  • Correct transmission fluid level or condition issues according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Repair or replace a failed fork B actuator that does not produce movement when commanded.
  • Repair a jammed fork B or damaged synchroniser teeth inside the transmission.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving if the transmission is stuck in gear, slipping, or shifting harshly; further operation can worsen internal damage or leave you without the expected gear. If it has entered limp mode, arrange recovery or prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
