What it means
Shift fork C cannot leave its current engagement position when the actuator commands movement. Mechanical jam or actuator without travel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift fork C moves a gear-engaging sleeve inside the transmission when the control module commands a shift. The module monitors fork movement and sets this code when fork C remains in its current position instead of travelling as commanded, which can result from a mechanical jam or an actuator that does not move it.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Shift fork mechanically jammed
- Synchroniser teeth damaged
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame and transmission live data to identify the shift request when fork C stopped moving and whether limp mode was commanded.
- Check the transmission fluid condition and level using the vehicle manufacturer's procedure, since a problem inside the transmission can interfere with fork movement.
- Inspect accessible fork C actuator wiring and connectors for damage or poor connection that could prevent the commanded movement.
- Use a suitable scan-tool actuator test, if supported, to compare the fork C command with its reported position.
- If the electrical command is present but fork C does not travel, inspect the fork and synchroniser assembly for a mechanical jam or damaged teeth.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged or poorly connected fork C actuator wiring or connectors.
- Correct transmission fluid level or condition issues according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Repair or replace a failed fork C actuator that does not produce movement when commanded.
- Repair a jammed fork C or damaged synchroniser teeth inside the transmission.
Can I keep driving?
Do not continue driving if the transmission is stuck in gear, slipping, or shifting harshly; further operation can worsen internal damage or leave you without the expected gear. If it has entered limp mode, arrange recovery or prompt diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
