OBD-II fault code

P2848: Shift Fork D Position Sensor Incorrect Neutral Position Indicated

What it means

The position sensor for shift fork D indicates the neutral position when the fork is mechanically engaged in a gear, or vice versa. Sensor reference offset.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift fork D moves the transmission's gear-engaging mechanism, while its position sensor reports whether the fork is in neutral or engaged. The transmission control module compares that report with the fork's actual operating state; a sensor reference offset can make it identify neutral and engagement incorrectly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor mechanically misadjusted from neutral
  2. Fork pin worn — neutral travel widened

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and transmission live data to see when the fork D sensor reported neutral and whether the module expected a gear engagement.
  2. Inspect the fork D sensor connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or fluid contamination that could affect its position signal.
  3. Compare the fork D sensor reading with the commanded gear state during a suitable scan-tool check to confirm the neutral indication is offset.
  4. Check whether the sensor is mechanically misadjusted relative to the fork D neutral position, following the vehicle manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If adjustment does not correct the mismatch, inspect the fork D pin and related mechanism for wear that widens neutral travel.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, damaged, or contaminated fork D sensor connector or wiring.
  • Adjust the fork D position sensor to the manufacturer's neutral-position procedure.
  • Replace a fork D sensor that continues to report an offset after correct adjustment.
  • Repair worn fork D pin or internal shift mechanism components causing excess neutral travel.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if shifts are delayed, harsh, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode; the fork D position mismatch can leave the transmission in an unexpected gear. If shifting remains normal, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
