OBD-II fault code

P271F: Electronic Gear Shift - Position Not Learned

What it means

The shift-by-wire controller did not complete the position learning routine for the gear selector. Without learned end stops the controller cannot map selector positions to gear requests.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

A shift-by-wire system converts the driver's selector movement into an electronic gear request. P271F sets when the controller has not learned the selector's positions or end stops, so it may not reliably map selector movement to the requested gear.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Learning routine aborted by other DTC or low voltage
  2. Shifter replaced without subsequent learn

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and scan all related modules for faults or low-voltage events that may have interrupted the position-learning routine.
  2. Verify battery and charging-system condition, since unstable voltage can prevent learning from completing.
  3. Check whether the selector or shift-by-wire components were recently replaced or disconnected and confirm their connectors are fully seated.
  4. Review live selector position and requested-gear data while moving the selector through its positions to find missing or implausible readings.
  5. After correcting other faults, perform the manufacturer-specified position-learning procedure and confirm that it completes and the gear requests agree.

Common fixes

  • Restore stable battery voltage and clear any underlying faults that prevented learning.
  • Reconnect or repair loose selector and shift-by-wire wiring connections.
  • Perform the manufacturer-specified position-learning procedure after selector service or replacement.
  • Replace a faulty selector or position sensor if its readings remain invalid during diagnosis.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only if the displayed gear matches the gear selected and engagement is predictable; avoid trips if shifts are delayed or missing. The vehicle may remain in one gear or fail to select the intended gear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
